The “Mission Label” plate of important quality assessment of the European Union for the capital city's climate plan prepared as part of the European mission “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities” has been unveiled in the foyer of the first floor of Riga City Council.

“The “Mission Label” is an important European recognition that confirms that the Riga Climate Plan is reliable, in line with EU goals, and feasible. It is not just a symbolic award – this recognition opens the door to additional funding, international cooperation, and expert support that will help implement practical projects in our city. This opportunity will provide significant benefits, help to restore old infrastructure, help green the city and improve air quality, but it will require everyone's involvement – both from the municipality and inhabitants," emphasises Jānis Ikaunieks, Director of the Riga Energy Agency.

Riga has become one of 100 European cities to have received the assessment of European Union "Mission Label" – a quality mark that confirms the conformity of the strategy of the city with the EU Climate Mission objectives. This initiative is a part of the Horizon Europe programme, which aims to make 100 EU cities climate-neutral and smart by 2030, serving as a model for the rest of Europe.  So far, 92 cities across Europe have received "Mission Label" status – and Riga is one of them.

"This is a significant step that demonstrates Riga's commitment to moving towards climate neutrality. This will open up opportunities to attract European support for environmental initiatives at a time when climate change – warmer winters, hotter summers and stronger storms – is becoming increasingly felt. The city will have the opportunity to invest purposefully in the development of transport, building insulation, and the restoration of the green environment. "Environmental issues are no longer just an idea - they are becoming an essential part of the work of the local government," says Viesturs Zeps, Chairman of the Riga City Council Housing and Environment Committee.

The recognition granted by “Mission Label” opens up wide opportunities for further development:

  • Access to funding – due to “Mission Label” status, Riga opens the door to attracting additional funding from EU funds, the European Investment Bank and other sources. For example, an agreement has already been signed with significant funding for investments in cooperation with "Rīgas meži", and several more strategic projects are being developed.
  • Support for innovation – the city can apply for special Horizon Europe programmes designed specifically for these 92 cities, including grants available for the implementation of pilot projects and innovative solutions.
  • International recognition – Riga strengthens its position in the international space as one of the leaders in the field of sustainable development.

Riga's climate neutrality plan includes several important directions – the transition to sustainable public transport, improvement of energy efficiency of buildings, use of renewable energy, as well as promotion of public participation and innovation.

Europe's “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities” mission is one of five EU missions aimed at addressing major societal challenges by 2030. Riga was included in this initiative in 2022 and has since been actively involved in cooperation platforms and pilot projects with other European cities.
