After the huge success of the animated film "Flow" worldwide and receipt of the US Academy Award "Oscar", four characters - cat, dog, capybara and lemur - were encountered in the urban environment of Riga. They are all currently hibernating, but the film's protagonist - cat - will be encountered at the entrance of the Splendid Palace cinema until spring. In the meantime, the residents of Riga are invited to make their proposals and vote for the permanent location of the film's characters in the urban environment of Riga until 20 December.
The Urban Art and Design Division of the Department of Education, Culture and Sport is currently working on a plan to exhibit all the characters together next spring.
The residents of Riga are invited to vote by choosing the most suitable place where they would like to see the characters of the animated film “Flow” - Uzvaras Park, Mežaparks, Mūkusalas Street waterfront promenade or any other option.
Whereas, Fridays as of 12 December, cinema “Splendid Palace” will host a special series of film screenings "All films about cats." “Flow” team selection” offering to the cinema visitors especially selected cinema works from the range of the world cinematography.
So far, characters of “Flow” could be encountered at the letters of the environmental object "RIGA" - at the Freedom Square, Town Hall Square, Uzvaras Park and Mežaparks.
Sculptures of the cat and the lemur are made by artist Kristaps Andersons, the character of capybara is made by the Lithuanian artist Donats Mockus, whereas, the dog is a work made by artist Inese Valtere. The artists made the "Flow" characters in less than a month.
During the season, the cat had three repairs - its tail was broken off twice, and its paw - once. The other animals did not suffer from vandalism.
Director Gints Zilbalodis, who was honoured with the title "Riga Resident of the Year" in 2024, has achieved an unprecedented success in the history of Latvian cinema - his animated film "Flow" has become the first Latvian film to be nominated for and to receive the US Academy Award “Oscar” in the “Best Animated Feature Film” category. The Academy Awards ceremony became a culmination for the world film industry award season, in which “Flow” has received more than 70 international awards so far, in nearly all the continents. These awards include the European Film Academy Award for the best animated feature film, US Golden Globe Award, two Annie Awards, conferred by the International Animated Film Association in Hollywood, more than 10 awards from the US associations of film critics, French national film award “Caesar” and many other significant awards.
