Flushing of water pipes is a preventive work. This means that it is done regularly so that problems do not arise. The aim is to maintain high drinking water quality and stable water supply. Rinsing helps to prevent deposits from accumulating in the pipes. Sludges are particles of iron and other substances that settle inside the pipes over time.

This year, Rīgas ūdens plans to flush 360 km of water pipes. This plan has already been implemented. As the weather is still warm, work continues. If the required water quality is achieved earlier during rinsing, the works shall be completed before the scheduled time.

After rinsing, the water in these areas may look white. This is because there are many air bubbles in the water. Such water is safe for use and does not harm health. For example, when a tap is opened at home after repair, the water can also be white, but after a short time becomes transparent.

During flushing, the water flow rate in the pipes is increased and air is added. It flushes out deposits – iron and mineral particles. This reduces the turbidity of the water and improves the colour and taste of the water.

Based on the study, the company is developing a long-term flushing plan for the water pipes. This helps to determine which stages to rinse first. The plan covers a network of water pipes almost 1 550 km long. The plan shall provide for the flushing of mains and distribution water pipes at least every 5 years. SIA Rīgas ūdens is the largest water company in Latvia.

This ensures the extraction, purification and supply of water. It also collects and treats wastewater in Riga and its surroundings. Quality services, good and safe systems and intelligent use of resources are important for the company. Rīgas ūdens is the first municipal company in Latvia to raise money on the capital market. It is also the first company in Northern Europe to issue bonds according to the European Green Bond Standard. Bonds are securities with which a company borrows money from investors.
