This week in Riga there will be flushing of the main water pipe in the section of 5.2 km from the turn to Langstiņi (Vidzeme highway) to the water output in the Jugla river.
Rinsing works are planned for four days – from Tuesday, October 27, 9.00 a.m. to Friday, October 30, 8.00 a.m. During the rinsing, water fouling is possible in Jugla, Teika, Čiekurkalns and Bergi, but from 9:00 on October 27 to 22:00 on October 28, there is also a water supply interruption in Langstiņi and part of Upesciems in Garkalne parish.
The purpose of preventive flushing of water pipes is to maintain a consistently high quality of drinking water and ensure a stable water supply, preventing the accumulation of deposits in the system. In total, Rīgas ūdens had planned to flush 360 km of water pipes this year, which has already been done, but the warm weather now allows these works to continue.
If the required water quality is achieved faster as a result of flushing the water pipe, the works will be completed before the specified time. After rinsing work in these areas, the water may be saturated with air, which visually makes it white, but is absolutely safe for use and not harmful to health.
During flushing, the accumulated deposits – iron and mineral particles – are flushed out of the pipes with an increased water flow rate and air, which helps reduce water turbidity, improve water color and taste.
Based on a study carried out in cooperation with Riga Technical University, Rīgas ūdens has developed a long-term flushing plan for water mains networks. This allows for the prioritisation of the flushing sequence of the nearly 1 550 km long water mains network, with flushing of the mains and distribution water mains networks at least every five years.
