Street for temporary pedestrians also outside the center
"During the last two years, the streets of Dzirnavu, Antonijas and Alberta in the Quiet Centre have temporarily become pedestrian streets during the European Mobility Week, with vehicle traffic temporarily closed and a street space reserved for pedestrians and entrepreneurs. This year, the municipality wanted to extend such an initiative beyond the centre, inviting residents to submit proposals for streets in various neighbourhoods of Riga, where the creation of short-term pedestrian streets could be tried out in the future. Assessing the applications received, this year Sturmanu Street in Bolderaja received support, where the event dedicated to mobility will be a double celebration, because it is this summer that the street has also acquired new cover," explains Kristaps Kauliņš, Director of the Department of Outdoors and Mobility of Riga Municipality.
‘The motto of the event is “Movement with purpose”, which reflects the essence of the concept of mobility, which can take various forms, but is always linked to everyday choices and habits. By choosing to move more environmentally friendly and active, we take care of our health, environment, community and well-being at the same time. We believe that this event will make it possible to feel that the streets can serve not only to organise traffic, but also become a place for community needs, various activities and recreation," says Madara Gruntmane Dujana, the producer of the event, from the creative association I did it.
