From 16 to 20 September, the active part of the national defence training ‘Namejs 2026’ takes place in and around Riga. At this time, the city has a lot of soldiers, allied soldiers, national guardsmen and military vehicles. In some places there are training checkpoints and special obstacles. Unmanned aerial vehicles and military aircraft are flying. Sometimes there may be temporary restrictions on traffic and movement. Everything you see in the city is pre-planned training and is not a real threat.

During the training, soldiers and national guards move around different places of Riga day and night. Particularly active training takes place in the districts of Pētersalas-Andrejsalas, Brasa, Čiekurkalns, Teika, Mežciems, Torņakalns, Ziepniekkalns, Bolderāja, Daugavgrīva and Sala.

Training assignments take place both in the city and in state and municipal buildings, as well as in important infrastructure locations. The National Armed Forces, the National Guard, allied soldiers, the State Police, the Riga Municipal Police, local government institutions and companies participate.

Creation of a learning countermobility point in the new Teika

On the evening of 16 September, in the New Teika, at Ropažu Street 6, elements of learning counter-mobility and checkpoints begin to be installed. Works start around 20:00.

The aim of counter-mobility measures in training is to train the ability to control and, if necessary, limit the movement of vehicles through various obstacles and control points.

Citizens should know that there will be soldiers, military vehicles and training obstacles in the area around New Teika. If necessary, there may be temporary movement or traffic restrictions in certain locations.

Anti-mobility and object protection training in Daugavgriva

On 18 September, training also takes place at SIA Rīgas ūdens biological treatment plant at Daugavgrīva, 60 Dzintaru Street. It trains the protection of critical infrastructure using training counter-mobility elements and involving soldiers and national guards.

The most intense lessons are in the morning. The population of Bolderaja and Daugavgriva at this time sees a lot of soldiers and military vehicles.

Some places hear noise related to learning

During the day, learning munitions are used in certain learning scenarios, which produce short noise moments. At night, loud exercises are not planned so as not to interfere with the sleep and rest of the population.

During the training, unmanned aerial vehicle flights and military transport and armoured vehicles are carried out in Riga. Residents are encouraged not to worry if the city sees soldiers in combat equipment, military vehicles, obstacles or other elements of training.

On the night of September 19, checkpoint on the Salu bridge

On the night of September 19, training also takes place on the Island Bridge. From 18 September 22:00 to 19 September 07:00 together with the State Police train the deployment and operation of checkpoints.

At this time, drivers have to face possible traffic slowdowns and short-term restrictions. Road users must follow police instructions.

Practical civilian evacuation exercises ongoing

On 18 and 19 September, practical civilian evacuation exercises are held in Riga. On September 18, from 15:45 to 16:00, participants gather at Aleksandra Greena Boulevard at Victory Park. After that, they are taken by bus to Riga Arkadia Secondary School at 6 Melnsila Street, where a learning evacuation centre is established.

The training shall cover the assembly, conveyance, registration and admission of the population to the evacuation centre, as well as the cooperation between the services and authorities involved. The training ends on the morning of 19 September.

Helicopter lands in Victory Park

On September 19, medical evacuation training with a helicopter takes place in the Victory Park. Helicopters shall use the officially approved approach point in the park. During this time, the surrounding area is enclosed for safety reasons.

During training in other places of Riga, other checkpoints, obstacles and military training elements may also be established. Residents and drivers are encouraged to understand the temporary restrictions on movement or traffic and to follow the instructions of the State Police, the Riga Municipal Police and the participants in the training.

The aim of the ‘Namejs 2026’ exercise is to test and improve the ability of the National Armed Forces, allies, state and local government authorities to act together when a country is at risk. Particular attention is paid to cooperation between civil and military services, the continuity of essential services, the functioning of the civil protection system and the response to mixed threats (e.g. threats that are simultaneously military, informative and economic).
