Riga logo/historical explanation

The Riga City Council has updated the current visual identity of the municipality, to be used in digital communication, in the public outdoor, as well as in the presentation of the city abroad. Along with these changes, it is also planned to gradually reduce the number of pages of Riga City Council institutions on social networks by simplifying citizens' communication with the municipality in the digital environment.

The restored identity is based on the keys of the city, which has been the symbol of Riga since the 13 th century. The keys have been given new forms every century, but there is a constant one, under the cover of a cross of keys.

The restored identity or graphic mark combines the key elements of Riga, which have been different in different historical stages – from the representation of the oldest keys in Riga in 1226 to the drawing keys of the prominent Latvian grafik Anch lark. It changes the graphic mark of Riga into the historic traditions of the city. The crossed keys in the restored identity also symbolise the interaction and cooperation between the vast city and its population.

The last time the identity and guidelines of the Riga authorities were updated in 2012. During this period, the municipality has developed different types of use of the symbols of Riga, but they were not regulated in internal rules and in a style book. Along with the renewal of the city's graphic label, guidelines for its use have been developed as well as internal rules for the use of the uniform visual identity of the municipality.

At the same time, the municipality gradually simplifies and arranges communication with citizens in the digital environment. If so far their social network accounts have been held by a number of municipal authorities, their number will be reduced by content in structured thematic pages. In these pages of social networks, Riga residents and city guests will be able to find out about the most important topics of the municipality; obtain practical information about the services provided by the City Council; and see news regarding entertainment and active leisure facilities in Riga.

The visual identity of Riga municipality has been updated by the study “Overpriced”, which has long-standing experience in the development of corporate identities, has also worked with other municipalities, as well as local and international companies. The studio has received awards for its work on several occasions.
