To make classical arts more accessible to the public, from July 12 to August 14 in Riga, large-format reproduction of paintings from the Prado Museum in Madrid will be viewed in Esplanade Park.
The project is being carried out by the Spanish Embassy in Latvia in cooperation with the Riga Municipality and Prado Museum, as well as with the involvement of the Latvian National Museum of Fine Arts. .At the same time, the opening of the exhibition will mark the Spanish Presidency of the EU Council, which will take place in the second half of 2023.
The Prado Urban Project began its course in 2015, when the reproduction of paintings was exposed to the streets of several Latin American capitals, thanks to the initiatives of the Spanish cultural centres, bringing paintings out of the Prado museum and making them available in public spaces. In 2019, by celebrating the museum's second hundred years, the project took a new turn, touring different cities in the Spanish area itself. Reproduction of the paintings was brought to Riga from Estonia, where they were exposed in Kadriorga Park last year.
This open-air exhibition consists of large-format reproductions of paintings in their original size (scale 1: 1), carefully selecting major masterpieces from the Prado museum collection. The viewer can travel on a small journey, taking a chronological view of the various painting schools which form the artistic panorama of the Prado museum, from the 12 th century to the early 20 th century, by introducing the history of Spain and Europe, as well as the general history of Western art through Spanish, Italian, Flemish, French, German and Dutch paintings. for jobs.
In Riga there will be 50 works painted by supermasters such as Velaskess, Goija, El Greko, Ticiana, Ruben, Bosch, Rembrandt, etc., with the greatest emphasis on Spanish painting, which is not yet so well known for most of Latvia's population.
