On Friday, 19 January, at 13:00, a commemorative plaque in memory of the politician and one of the most prominent personalities of the Latvian National Awakening will be unveiled at the intersection of Augusta Deglava Street and Itas Kozakevičas Street.
The ceremony for the unveiling of the plaque will be attended by the Chairman of the Riga City Council Vilnis Ķirsis, the Vice-Chairman of the Transport Issues Committee Miroslavs Kodis, the Ambassador of Poland to the Republic of Latvia Monika Michaliszyn, MEP Sandra Kalniete, journalist and politician Dainis Īvāns, the President of the 4 May Declaration Club Velta Čebotarenoka, the Chairman of the Polish Association of Latvia Pēteris Dzalbe, and others.
The Riga City Council also invites media representatives and everyone who admires Kozakeviča’s work to attend the event.
The idea and initiator of the event is MP Miroslavs Kodis who, wishing to honour Kozakeviča’s work in strengthening the relations between Latvia and Poland, called on the City Council to place a commemorative plaque on the building at the intersection of A. Deglava Street and I. Kozakevičas Street.
It has already been reported that MPs supported the proposal to rename the section of Nīcgales Street, the dead-end from Nīcgales Street to Augusta Deglava Street, as I. Kozakevičas Street. The road section is close to the Ita Kozakeviča Polish Secondary School in Riga.
At the beginning of the Awakening, Kozakeviča was a member of the board at the Latvian Friends of Polish Culture Association and afterwards was elected as the chairperson of the newly-founded Polish Association of Latvia. She was a member of the Supreme Council and voted for Latvia’s independence.
