This weekend, 17 and 18 May, the 35th anniversary of the Rimi Riga Marathon will take place in Riga, bringing together thousands of runners and guests of the capital. Significant traffic restrictions are expected during the event, which will come into effect in some places from the evening of Friday, 16 May. On Sunday, 18 May, vehicle traffic will be limited or closed on several streets in the capital and on bridges over the Daugava River. During the event – both on Saturday and Sunday – there will also be significant changes to several public transport routes, which the municipality will report separately.
On Saturday, 17 May, from 08:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. the Children's Day of the Rimi Riga Marathon, and from 10:40 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. the DPD Mile Run will take place. The Rimi Riga Marathon, Half Marathon, as well as the 10 km and 6 km races will take place between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, 18 May.
On Saturday, from 10:40 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the State Police, in cooperation with the Riga Municipal Police, will detain and close vehicle traffic on the race route of DPD Mile, while on Sunday, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., vehicle traffic will be restricted and closed on the race routes of Rimi Riga Marathon, Half Marathon, 10 km and 6 km.
From 8:00 p.m. on Friday, 16 May, to 06:00 a.m. on Monday, 19 May, road traffic will be closed in the section of 11. novembra krastmala between Akmens Bridge and Muitas Street. During that same time, road traffic will be closed on the street parallel and adjacent to 11. novembra krastmala on its Old Town side, between Poļu gāte and JaunStreet.
Changes in traffic organization in Old Riga
From Friday, 16 May, at 8:00 p.m. to Monday, 19 May, at 6:00 a.m., two-way traffic will be organised on JaunStreet, Krāmu Street, the section of Pils Street from Doma Square to Mazā Miesnieku Street, the section of Jēkaba Street from Smilšu Street to Doma Square and on the Doma Square.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, 18 May 18, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., two-way traffic will be organised on the Kaļķu Street section from Mazās Monētu Street to Šķūņu Street and on the Šķūņu Street section from Kaļķu Street to Amatu Street.
Prohibitions on stopping and parking vehicles
During the event, stopping and parking of vehicles will be prohibited in several places in the city, and abandoned vehicles will, if necessary, be moved to another permitted parking location.
From Friday, 16 May 16, at 8:00 p.m. to Monday, 19 May, at 6:00 a.m., stopping and parking of vehicles will be prohibited on both sides of 11. novembra krastmala, in the section from Akmens Bridge to Muitas Street; on the street parallel and adjacent to 11. novembra krastmala on its Old Town side, in the section from Poļu gāte to JaunStreet and on both sides of Kaļķu Street, in the section from 11. novembra krastmala to RātsSquare.
Limitations of micromobility tools
At the event venues – on 17 May from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on 18 May from 6:00 a.m. until the end of the event, the traffic of e-bikes, electric scooters, bicycles, cycle rickshaws and electric cars will be prohibited.
Also, from Friday, 16 May, at 8:00 p.m. to Monday, 19 May, at 6:00 a.m., the micromobility equipment parking area on 11. novembra krastmalat will be closed. Meanwhile, from Saturday, 17 May at 8:00 p.m. to Sunday, 18 May at 6:00 p.m., parking of micromobility tools will be prohibited on the Ķīšezera Street cycle path from Gustava Zemgala Street to Koknese Avenue.
