From 1 November of this year, a new traffic transmission from Tvaika Street to Kundziņsala, as well as a new port control point at Uriekstes Street 42 (Delta 17), will be opened for traffic to the port of Riga in Kundziņsala.
With the opening of the new infrastructure, from 1 November, trucks will be able to enter and leave the port territory in Kundziņsala in two ways – both through the new traffic overpass, using the port control point at 42 Uriekstes Street (Delta 17), and, as before, using the control point at 9 Uriekstes Street (Delta 1). Both control points will operate in 24/7 mode.
Such traffic arrangements will be in place until the end of this year. As of 1 January 2027, the port control point at Delta 1, Uriekstes Street 9, will be closed for traffic to Kundziņsala. From the new year, freight traffic to and from the port terminals in Kundziņsala will be organized only through the new traffic transfer through the control point Delta 17.
From 1 November, the employees of the port terminals working on the island will be able to reach the industrial territory of Kundziņsala both via the new traffic transmission and, as before, via a bridge from Aptiekas Street, using the control point on the Kundziņsala 3 line 36 (Delta 3). It will be open every working day from 6.00 to 20.00. Also, upon prior agreement with the Port Police, access to construction facilities in the territory of Kundziņsala will also be organized through Delta 3.
The new transmission will also be freely available to residents of nearby neighbourhoods. An additional car turning lane has been built on it towards and out of the residential area of Kundziņsala. At the same time, a comfortable pedestrian and bicycle path with lighting and a special horizontal marking for runners have been built. Three lifts with stairs – one on the side of Tvaika Street and two on Kundziņsala – have been built to get pedestrians and cyclists to the overpass, providing access from both the residential area and the port area. At the same time, as before, residents will also be able to use the bridge from Aptiekas Street to get to the residential area of Kundziņsala.
Cargo carriers should take into account that while the construction of the new Border Crossing Infrastructure site in Kundziņsala is still underway, the State Border Guard, the SRS Customs Board and the Food and Veterinary Service will continue to work at their current address – 16 Uriekstes Street, where border check procedures and customs control will be ensured, as well as veterinary, phytosanitary, food safety and non-food product safety, quality and classification control of consignments. Carriers will also have to go to Uriekstes 16 by means of transport if, when applying for a customs procedure, the goods must be presented to the customs office or require customs control. In turn, the control of ionising radiation for goods transported by road will be ensured at 42 Uriekstes Street.
The registration of cargo road transport and visitor visits to the territory of the Port of Riga will continue to be carried out in the port's electronic pass ordering system OKS. Information on the procedure and rules for receiving badges is available on the website of the Freeport of Riga Authority: www.rop.lv/lv/lair-sanemsana.

On traffic transmission
The construction project of the traffic overpass is being implemented by the Riga Municipality in cooperation with the Freeport of Riga Authority. It has been implemented by attracting co-financing from the European Union Cohesion Fund, the implementation costs of the project are 82.6 million euros, of which 23 million euros consists of a grant from the state budget, 59.6 million euros - a loan from the state budget, and the financing from the European Union Cohesion Fund - 4.5 million euros.
The new overpass will further ensure a direct connection of Kundziņsala with the arterial road network of the city of Riga and improve the mobility of cargo as well as military transport to and from the port terminals. Together with the Eastern Highway and the Daudersala Overpass, the new connection will allow a greater flow of freight transport from the city centre.
At the same time, by developing the infrastructure for border control, access control and digitised logistics, a new port control point has been built at the request of the Freeport of Riga Authority. This will ensure the movement of six-lane transport, automated control processes and a unified access control system - automatic recognition of number plates, digital movement of cargo data and integration with the information systems of the control services. The administration has invested 1.3 million euros in the infrastructure of the control point.
“Kundziņsala is currently experiencing dynamic growth. It is home to leading port logistics companies. Several strategic development projects are currently being implemented in Kundziņsala. It is planned that already in the coming years a number of new companies will start operating in Kundziņsala - freight terminals, logistics centres, energy companies and smart production facilities. This scale of development is unthinkable without an effective connection to the urban and national transport network. The new traffic overpass will provide an opportunity to create an even more accessible business environment in Kundziņsala, where sustainable energy, modern industry and smart logistics can develop together", notes Ansis Zeltiņš, CEO of the Freeport of Riga.
